Presidential Committee Reveals $450m Invested in CNG Conversion Centres

The Presidential Committee on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has announced that over $450 million has been invested in the establishment of CNG conversion centres across Nigeria. This investment is part of the government's strategy to promote alternative energy solutions and reduce dependence on petrol.

Speaking at a press briefing, a spokesperson for the committee highlighted the government’s commitment to providing affordable and cleaner energy options for Nigerians. The conversion centres are designed to enable vehicles to switch from petrol to CNG, which is considered a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.

“The federal government is prioritising the expansion of CNG fuel sources to ensure that Nigerians can benefit from lower energy costs while contributing to a greener environment,” the spokesperson stated.

The committee revealed that the investment covers the establishment of over 50 CNG conversion centres nationwide, with plans to expand the number in the coming months. Local engineers and technicians are being trained to manage the conversion processes, ensuring the development of indigenous capacity and the creation of jobs.

“This initiative is not only about energy transition but also about empowering Nigerians and boosting our local expertise,” the spokesperson added.

Despite the progress, challenges such as limited public awareness and initial conversion costs remain. The committee acknowledged these issues and assured the public that efforts are underway to subsidize conversion costs and launch awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the benefits of CNG.

The government aims to convert a substantial percentage of Nigeria’s vehicle fleet to CNG in the coming years. To support this, additional incentives are being considered to encourage vehicle owners and transport companies to adopt the technology.

The investment in CNG conversion centres is seen as a significant step toward a more sustainable and cost-effective energy future for Nigeria. With continued support from stakeholders and the public, the initiative is expected to have a transformative impact on the nation’s energy landscape.
